James K: Home
James K grew up, one of thirteen children, on a northern Michigan dairy farm. He wrote his first song at age twelve, inspired by a conversation he overheard while riding on a school bus. After high school he bought a guitar and taught himself to play. With some friends he formed a rock band, playing in dance halls and clubs while attending college. He was drafted, sent to Vietnam, injured and received the Purple Heart. He returned to college and graduated from Eastern Michigan University. He moved to California where he met his wife, Miki. They have three children.
Over the years he as worked as a photographer, construction worker and craftsman. A knee injury in 1996 changed his life. Unable to work during post surgery recuperation he filled his days playing guitar and writing songs. He found himself taken by a wave of inspiration and creativity. Songs poured out, about his children, friendships, love, laughter, emotions, love of nature, the wonder and mystery of life. He went to his daughter’s kindergarten class on crutches and played these songs. The enthusiastic response he received led him to record, A Giggle Can Wiggle Its Way through A Wall. In 2002 he released his second CD, Good Morning Sun Goodnight Moon. Both CDs have received a Parents’ Choice Award. In the fall of 2007, he released his latest recording, Shoe Rock.
